I am making a prediction. The next President of the United States will be left handed. Yes that’s right both Barack Obama and John McCain are left handed. Actually 70% of the Presidents since Gerald Ford was elected were left handed. In the 1992 election Bill Clinton, George Bush senior, and Ross Perot were all left handed.
Most left handed people have natural leadership ability. They tend to think of problems in arcs and are able to look at the whole picture while right handed people tend to break things into smaller pieces
As a left hander I’m proud to be apart of this group. Hopefully one day I can become a great leader too.
So I was hanging out online today just checking my email and stuff and I came across a message someone had wrote me. Now this person and I have messaged each other back and forth a few times but nothing of substance. But today the message I read was different. I won’t repeat what it said but I will say I was offended. This person who doesn’t know me or what I’m about. The good that I’m trying to do in my life or the inspiration I’m trying to provide. It seemed like he wanted to sum up everything I am in one little shocking sentence. What’s worse is that his assumptions were completely inaccurate.
Now you know I like to stay positive when faced with adversity but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t sting a bit. I’ll be able to go on about my day but I wanted to share this with you. I think we all have certain perceptions of people based on the facts as we know it. The problem is some of these facts aren’t complete and some of them are completely inaccurate. Also, people change as they grow and learn about the world around them. I try everyday to find the good in everybody. I know it’s there. It may be down several layers. And sometimes it’s very difficult to get to. Sometimes it’s not worth the effort. Sometimes it is! I have learned that when you meet someone, they only give you a short glimpse of who they are. It’s takes trust to really open up to someone.
With this blog I’m really trying to open myself up and let people know who I am. I hope through my experiences you will learn something about yourself. Honestly I’m still working on trusting myself enough to let you completely inside. I hope you support me on this journey as I will always try to support you on yours.
I sent the person who inspired this post a reply. I wished him to have a nice day and I asked him to come read my blog. I hope he does. Thanks for the inspiration!
There is a website called The Big Word Project that lets you buy a word and link it to your website. They use the term “redefine” Today I redefined “Perception”.
I like to think of myself as a deck of cards. As I go through life I can play these cards when I need them. We all have our strong cards and our week cards. Some cards we have we never play and we just keep them to ourselves. Maybe those cards are weak by nature or just perceived to be weak by our own insecurities. Sometimes we realize our strongest card still bends and folds like our weaker cards. But when you group all your cards together you realize that everyone has the same cards in their deck.
The point is no one is more advantaged in this card game than you. Some have played their cards better some have not. But we all hold in our deck the possibility for greatness. What ever that may mean. It’s our job to keep moving. Keep playing our cards until we make the perfect full house, or the perfect Royal Flush. It’s possible. I promise you.
The most important thing to remember is that you are not just one or two of your cards. Sometimes we limit the hands we show. You’re made up of a whole deck cards. Everyone has their Ace of Spades and everyone has their Two of Clubs. You are a well rounded person and if you ever feel like you are inferior to someone remember that they have the same number of cards you do. You are just as special.
I want everyone today to pick a card you normally don’t use and share it with a friend. It could be a small secret or a whole side of you that you’ve never shown. You see the best way that you’re going to find your winning hand is play your whole deck. The more you open up to people the more they’ll open up to you. Each one of your cards is special and your great because of it. Never let anyone make you feel like you don’t have the winning hand. It’s all there in your own Deck of Cards. Share with me your stories.
So today I woke up and it was raining outside. It was one of those rains that make it hard to want to do anything. In fact it took me a while just to get out of bed. When I finally did, I got ready and went to work. On my break I was thinking about this blog and really wanted to explain how beautiful the rain was and how we should always find the best in everything. So I went outside and stared at the rain. I stood there to take it in and to find the good in it. I saw the fog it created. I saw droplets as they hit puddles. I felt the cold air. I tried the best I could to find something, anything that made the rainy day desirable. After about five minutes of being pelted with rain drops I went back inside. I came to the conclusion that it was just a miserable day. A cold, grey, wet, miserable day.
Sometimes you just wake up to a miserable day and no matter how you look at it you can’t find anything postive. It’s at these times when you have a choice. You can choose to be affected by your situation. Let the weather dictate your attitude and productivity. Or you can decide to say “I know I can’t control this situation, but I can control how I react to it”. Life is full of things that happen to us. Some good, some bad. It’s not what happens to us but how we react to it. You always have a choice. Remember this tomorrow when you wake up. Take a look around and tell yourself, “No matter what happens to me today, I’m going to have a great day!” Commit to it and you will!

I have kept myself distant from most people. The real me that is. I have portrayed only a portion of who I am. Some would agree that the part I’ve shown isn’t the most flattering. It’s important for me to let you inside now. I want to be your inspiration. I hope that I can touch your life as I better mine. I’m passionate about what I believe but will always be respectful of your views. Join me on this journey. You can always get a hold of me at william@achangingperception.com.
